Meet Kristin!
This soon-to-be mama of twins is a true inspiration! It has been so fun watching her from the start of her journey here, progress in her fitness, push her limits and now transition into focusing on staying healthy through pregnancy! Anyone that knows Kristin, knows she always walks in with a smile on her face! Thank you for always showing up and giving it your all Kristin!
How did your fitness journey begin? What was it like before Awaken Athletics?
I've always been active, throughout sports in high school and into college but struggled to find the motivation and discipline to continue lifting after being done with organized sports. It wasn't until 2019 when I was at my heaviest weight that I began to get back into focusing on my nutrition and getting in the gym again. After finishing nursing school it was difficult to create a new routine as I started out on night shifts, and soon all the motivation and discipline I had fell away. Then I saw so many people who came from all different levels of fitness posting about going to Katy, and thought hey if they can do it and they love it maybe I can too! In the beginning the idea of crossfit really scared me. I had only done traditional weight lifting and I didn't think I could do the high intensity workouts, but the support from Katy and all the other women in the classes really made me believe in time I could do the workouts without dying haha. I have now been going to Awaken Athletics for a year and a half and I truly cannot imagine my mornings without it. The love and support from all these women is truly unmatched.
What have your goals been while coming to Awaken Athletics & how have they evolved?
In the beginning my goals were to just workout consistently and get back to feeling healthy. Then as time went on my focus changed to getting stronger and faster. Katy really pushes you to do more than you think is possible, and is your biggest cheerleader when you succeed. Never did I think I would compete in a competition, and I doubted myself the entire time we were practicing for it, but I am so glad I did and I couldn't have done any of it without my team. Now at 26 weeks pregnant with twins, my goal is to just keep moving! Staying healthy and active is one of the best things we can do for our kids and it's very cool to see how much my body really can do.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start?
Jump in with both feet. It might seem so scary to start a new style of working out or do workouts that look hard, but we all started there and I think everyone would agree that taking that first step into the gym is the hardest. This group is truly unmatched and we're all here to support you!
What’s your favorite exercise? Least?
I would say my favorite lift is the deadlift. But in the workouts I surprisingly like wall balls! My least favorite is anything that involves the bike. Even though my hate for it has subsided a little bit, the burn it gives is truly unmatched.
Meet Samantha!
Since Sam started her journey at Awaken in 2021, life has thrown her so many ups & downs! She is a true testimony & inspiration of learning to be more in tune with her body & prioritizing her health & fitness through every phase! Juggling 5 kids, she has still made it a priority to focus on her health because she knows it makes her an even better mom! Fitness is a journey, one that is ever-changing and Sam is an amazing example of this!
How did your fitness journey begin? What was it like before Awaken Athletics?
I have always played sports and/or found a way to exercise most of my life. Before finding Awaken Athletics I hadn’t lifted in years and only went on runs when I had time. After having 2 kids and going through one of the hardest years of my life in 2021, I found Katy and her gym… and when I tell people it changed my life completely, I do not mean it lightly.
What have your goals been while coming to Awaken Athletics & how have they evolved?
My goals in the beginning were to just love myself again and be strong, mentally and physically. I discovered how incredible it feels to do REALLY hard things even when it feels like you can’t, then get done and feel like a bad ass for finishing that really hard thing. Katy’s workouts challenge my brain and body in a way I didn’t know I would love so much. Then I worked out through most of my 3rd pregnancy and felt incredible the whole time. Came back 4 weeks post partum, worked my butt off for another 4 months and then found out I was pregnant again.. with twins lol. I then took a 9 month break during the pregnancy and then c section recovery. I have been back for 3 months now and had zero idea how my body would react after such a long break, but Katy worked with me through every step I needed to take and I’m so pleased to start feeling strong again and hitting goals like I never left. Katy is the absolute best at what she does and she has helped my reach every goal I’ve wanted to reach the last 3 years through all my different stages of life. I’m so excited for 2025 in her gym with all the best women by my side!
What Challenges have you had along the way in your fitness journey?
Besides having 3 babies in a year lol.. I would say my biggest challenge has always been myself. I am my own worst critic (I think we all are). I like to push myself past what I think I’m capable of and sometimes I have unrealistic expectations for what my body is able to do in that moment especially since coming back post partum multiple times now. I have worked really hard to change my mind set around that and try my best to focus on all I have accomplished so far instead of how I’m not where I want to be.
How has your nutrition changed and affected your workouts/overall health?
Oh boy.. this is kind of a hard one for me because I have had unhealthy relationships with food a lot of my life. I try to not focus on food very much honestly or I will become obsessed with it. But I will say that eating cleaner foods and getting in tons of protein ALWAYS changes how I feel before, during and after my workouts. So because I have big goals in the gym, I do try hard to hit my goals around food too without restricting what I eat too much.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start?
JUST DO IT. I can’t say it enough. If you are scared or nervous or unsure.. just start. Just set a goal to go for a week and I promise you you’ll love it so much you’ll never want to leave (even though you also won’t be able to walk but you’ll learn to love that part too ). You’ll also meet and love some of the most incredible people that are all working towards goals just like you.
How has your lifestyle and mindset changed through fitness?
I use to only have goals to be skinny. To look a certain way. To feel a certain way about myself. But through the many phases of life I’ve been thrown.. I can now happily say my mindset has shifted to just simply be healthy and work my ass off. That’s what makes me feel good. Not a number on the scale or a number on the weights I lift, but the way I feel waking up everyday and pushing my body and mind for an hour even when I’m tired. That’s what makes me proud of me. Also, Katy’s hour long butt kickings are really nothing compared to the rest of my day with 5 kids!
What’s your favorite exercise? Least?
I hate burpees. And box jumps. But I love everything else to do with a killer lower body workout and I love a good run.
Client Highlight! Meet Stephany!
Stephany started with personal training & quickly switched over to group classes! It has been SO fun watching her become stronger & fitter than ever before in such a short period of time! She is a testament to what carving out “you” time can do, despite a extremely busy life! Thank you Stephany for all your hard work and dedication to the process, even when it’s challenging!!
How did your fitness journey begin? What was it like before Awaken Athletics?
My fitness journey started at an early age. I played competitive fast pitch and volleyball and then joined track to throw shot-put and discus. I loved working out with people and being on a team. Fast forward to adult hood and I continued to go to the gym and try and stay in shape. In may late 20’s I started having kids and tried to exercise during and after the pregnancies. As I had more children and got older it definitely became harder. After my 6th child I was diagnosed with a Thyroid disease and so my mindset had to change. I had six children and I needed to get healthy and stay that way. I worked out at home with my friends but not consistent enough. Moving forward a few years and I had stopped working out again. Without the accountability of a motivated friend or coach I always was inconsistent.
What have your goals been while coming to Awaken Athletics & how have they evolved?
My initial goal when coming to Awaken Athletics was just to lose weight and trim down. I had about 30 lbs. to lose and was not comfortable in my clothes or my own skin. My goal is still to be lean but mostly I want to be strong and healthy. My focus has become less of what the scale says. I know now if I'm eating the proper balance of foods and exercising daily that the scale will change.
What Challenges have you had along the way in your fitness journey?
The challenges are the same for a lot of people, kids, family, illness and injury. When my thyroid acts up I don’t have much energy and my shoulder has been pretty wore out for most of my adult life from sports growing up and in January I injured it. It set me back a couple months but now its better and stronger than before.
How has your nutrition changed and affected your workouts/overall health?
I have always thought to lose weight that I just needed to eat less, and I did lose weight but not in a sustainable way. So I would lose the weight then gain it back over and over again. Now I know that if I want to be healthy and strong I need to eat more good calories with the balance of my macros. My body can’t do what I'm asking it to do if I don’t give it fuel. That was pretty hard to learn after most of my life thinking that the only way to be lean is to deprive myself of food. I’m stronger now than probably ever in my life and continuing to make strength and endurance gains and I'm not hungry all the time. I have energy to get up and do the hard stuff on a daily basis.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start?
My advice is to just start! Every one of us at the gym started somewhere and it will be different for everyone but the best thing you can do is just show up and be consistent.
How has your lifestyle and mindset changed through fitness?
Well, to start I have never been a morning person but consistently getting up and being at the gym at 6am has changed that. I love my schedule, though its busy I can do it now.
Also I no longer think about what I can’t do, but think that If I keep working hard and showing up daily for myself it won’t be long till I can do the next thing I have never been able to do before.
I also know that my mindset has had to shift from caring for every one else at the expense of my own health to focusing on my self at least long enough to get my workout done daily. Sleep is probably one of the biggest changes I have made through my journey. Like food, getting the proper amount of sleep has been huge for me. Our bodies need rest to heal, not just physically but mentally too.
What’s your favorite exercise? Least?
Not sure if I have a favorite but my least favorite would be running. Hoping one day I can say I like it, but not yet.
Having a coach to cheer you on, along with the other ladies at the gym makes all the exercises more fun!
MEET CINDY!
Cindy has been coming to Awaken for over a year now & her journey has been so fun to be a part of. Change didn't happen over night for her, it took time, being super consistent & dedicated & it is paying off in huge ways!! Thank you for being a part of the Awaken crew & sharing your journey, we are so lucky to have you!
How did your fitness journey begin? What was it like before Awaken Athletics?
I came to Awaken Athletics 3 months after having a baby. I had gained a lot of weight in my pregnancy and was desperate to fit back into all my clothes and feel like myself again. I had lost weight in the past under Katy’s coaching so I knew it would work but it had been years since I was dedicated to fitness. Since college, I hadn’t maintained consistent fitness. I would gain and lose the same 20 pounds all the time. I have been going to Awaken now 3-5 times per week for over a year and have no plans to ever stop.
What have your goals been while coming to Awaken Athletics & how have they evolved?
My goal when I started was to lose 30 pounds of pregnancy weight and fit back into my pre pregnancy jeans. It took me about a year of consistent hard work to accomplish that goal and now I feel like I look better and more toned than I did before I even got pregnant. My goal now is to build more muscle! I had been thin in the past but never very toned and it’s been exciting to gain strength and muscle tone. I also think building and maintaining more lean muscle mass will allow me to keep up with my kids, age better, protect bone density, burn more calories, improve my quality of life, reduce my back pain, improve my confidence levels, I could go on and on. As I approach turning 40 I find increasing my muscle mass to be more important than I used to.
What Challenges have you had along the way in your fitness journey?
It was challenging in a lot of ways. When I started, I was running a business, breastfeeding with a new baby, and my dad was sick, so it was tough to commit to making time for myself and focusing on my health and fitness, but I knew the alternative (not losing the baby weight) was going to be harder both mentally and physically. I wanted to not hate taking pictures with my baby and family and wanted to not stress everyday about what to wear because nothing fit and wanted to feel less anxious, more energized and focused and more confident – I knew I had to commit to myself and my fitness in order to have that. It was also challenging when I didn’t get the results I wanted very quickly haha. Again, it took me a full year to lose weight and feel fit which was frustrating at times, but I just kept at it and kept showing up and doing my best.
How has your nutrition changed and affected your workouts/overall health?
Katy taught me that I need to plan all my meals around protein and consume as many grams of protein per day as my goal weight. Once I started eating cleaner, more whole foods and increasing my protein intake, I started to see more results and felt much more fueled for my workouts! You must take your diet and nutrition seriously to really see dramatic changes.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start?
JUST DO IT. The toughest part about Awaken Athletics is simply showing up to your first class or first week of classes but again, I believe the alternative is much harder. Now I enjoy the workouts, I enjoy being around this group of women and pushing myself and getting an hour a day to myself. I feel so good when I leave class, I can’t imagine not coming anymore. Everyone was also so welcoming and encouraging when I started. It’s all so much more scary and intimidating in our minds. Just get here, you won’t regret it, but you will regret not committing and doing this for yourself.
How has your lifestyle and mindset changed through fitness?
My lifestyle and mindset have changed in endless ways. I view food more as fuel and medicine now as opposed to pleasure items, although I don’t feel excessive about it. I still enjoy dessert, don’t get me wrong. My lifestyle has changed though in valuable ways like not dreading a summer vacation because I don’t want to get in a swimsuit – now I can do things like swim with my daughter without being insecure. I don’t dread social situations as much; my anxiety has decreased big time and my energy levels have gone up.
What’s your favorite exercise? Least?
I don’t think I will ever enjoy the assault bike but I enjoy every workout really because no matter how difficult it is, I feel so good when I finish!
MEET JOURDAN!
To say it's been a privilege to be a part of her journey is an understatement! Jourdan has really proven what showing up for yourself, even in the most challenging times, can do! We are all a work in progress, it whether we choose to do that work or not and Jourdan absolutely puts in the work! She is a positive light every time she comes to the gym, thank you for being genuinely YOU Jourdan, you inspire all of us!
How did your fitness journey begin? What was it like before Awaken Athletics?
Fitness has always been a part of my life outside of a couple teenage years when I was able to get away with eating a pint of ice cream a day and not exercising 😂 I played sports growing up and then transitioned to the gym in college. I have taken breaks here and there over the years, but I always find my way back!
What have your goals been while coming to Awaken Athletics & how have they evolved?
When I first reached out to Katy I was seeking a place where I felt I belonged, felt comfortable, felt like I would be excited to show up every day and I found just that. I’d tried other gyms in the area and nothing was quite the right fit until Awaken Athletics. My goal at the start was just to get back into it. I’d spent the previous year struggling to be consistent with my workouts, my nutrition, and ultimately with my mental health. I knew I needed to make a change, I just wanted to feel better. The gym has always been a place for me to leave whatever I have going on in my personal life at the door for an hour. My favorite part about Awaken is that I get to do just that while being surrounded by like-minded women who support each other day in and day out. There’s nothing quite like the community Katy’s built, it’s super special.
Over the course of the year and a half that I have been at Awaken, my entire life has changed and so have my fitness and nutrition goals. I started with just a couple workouts a week, and now I’m in the gym 5 days a week typically. I sought out nutrition advice from Katy early on and it helped me in being more mindful of what I put in my body. My primary goal every day in the gym is simply to do my best so that I can feel my best both physically and mentally inside and outside of the gym!
What Challenges have you had along the way in your fitness journey?
Motivation, consistency, and discipline have always been challenges for me, and ultimately my mental health. I also spent many years in a relationship that negatively affected my view of myself and it made it hard for me to show up for myself often. Overcoming the voice in your head shouting “you’re not good enough” is easier said than done. It’s easy to just throw in the towel and not show up for yourself when you don’t feel like you have the support you need. I left that relationship this year and taking care of myself both mentally and physically became more important than ever before. Wouldn’t you know it, I turned to the gym!
One of my favorite things about Awaken Athletics is that we all care for each other, include each other, and show up for each other. On my worst days I know I can show up to the gym and I’ll feel 10 times better when I leave after having smiled and laughed and exercised with some of the most badass women I’ve ever encountered in my life. I’m grateful for that. I am also so so thankful for a coach who will check up on you because she genuinely cares. They don’t make them like Katy, you guys! She’s special.
How has your nutrition changed and affected your workouts/overall health?
Being mindful of what I put in my body has been a game changer. This applies to everything you put in your body in my mind, not just food. I struggled with my hormones for years as well. After 14 years, I stopped taking hormonal birth control and I feel more in tune with my body and clear minded than ever before. I’ve also reached a point now where I’m hardly drinking alcohol and I genuinely thought I’d never say that. When I eat poorly or have a drink, I can tell that I’m inflamed and not feeling my best. I have found that it just feels really good to feel good. Mind you, I’m not big on tracking my food and I still like to live my life! All things in moderation of course 😉 I feel blessed to have an able body that can do hard things and I choose to do my best to take care of it day in and day out! It not only helps my performance in the gym, but it keeps my mind feeling sharp as well.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start?
Just come by and hang with us! You’ll love it. There is a place in this gym for everyone. We have fun and we support each other. You will not regret it, I promise.
How has your lifestyle and mindset changed through fitness?
For the better. When I am consistent, I am my best self. Going to Awaken has given me the space and support I’ve always need to be consistent. Fitness not only helps me physically, but mentally as well. Most of the time I think to myself “If I just did that workout, I can do anything I set my mind to today!”
What’s your favorite exercise? Least?
We all know I love a good power clean! And Bulgarian split squats are the bane of my existence. So good, but so brutal 😅
Meet Abby!!
If you want to know someone who makes no excuses, shows up for themselves to be their best wife, mom & human, look no further! Abby is such an inspiration, not only because she's shown up throughout her entire pregnancy, but because she's a shining example of what it looks like to commit to her health! Thank you for being you Abby!
-----------
How did your fitness journey begin? What was it like before Awaken Athletics?
I grew up playing school sports and select sports so I was always active with those and then after high school I very inconsistently worked out at the gym or doing at home workouts. I never felt very strong or really knew what to do at the gym. I would say that I’m a fairly active person though so the desire to workout was there I just didn’t have something that really motivated me.
What have your goals been while coming to Awaken Athletics & how have they evolved?
When I first started coming to Katy’s I was 9 months postpartum and really wanted to get back in shape and feel good in my own skin. I started working out 5 days a week in May of 2023 and felt better than I ever have. I felt so much stronger, more motivated and actually looked forward to going to my workouts and pushing myself. Then I found out I was pregnant again in November of 2023 so my goal then changed to staying as active as possible during my pregnancy, I am super happy to say that I have continued working out 4-5 days a week so far all 37 weeks of my pregnancy. Early on I was even lifting heavier than I ever have before. My goal was to continue working out as long as it was healthy to do so and I feel as though Katy has made that possible! She pushes you but never beyond what your body can do and lets me take it easy when I need to.
What Challenges have you had along the way in your fitness journey?
Finding motivation to workout has always been a challenge of mine. Before I had my son we lost a baby over halfway through a pregnancy so when I first started working out at Katy’s I had been pregnant for what felt like 2 years and had gone through a lot mentally and physically. I can not say enough good things about the environment that Katy had created of supporting and encouraging women because of it I feel motivated and cheered on every single workout I go to.
How has your nutrition changed and affected your workouts/overall health?
Not answering this cause I eat popsicles like every day at this point lol
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start?
Remember that everyone starts at different points and it can be so intimidating to join but you would be shocked how much support you will get and how much fun you will have!
How has your lifestyle and mindset changed through fitness?
I have an extremely active toddler boy and have no choice to have a very active lifestyle, working out consistently helps my energy levels so much so that I can keep up with him and makes me actually want to workout! I am actually dreading taking time off postpartum and can’t wait to come back after baby is here which is something I never thought I’d say but working out isn’t a chore to me anymore it’s something I look forward to.
What’s your favorite exercise? Least?
Least favorite is running and split squats for sure. Favorite would be back squats!

Teryn has been with Awaken Athletics since the beginning, she not only one strong mama, but she genuinely wants every woman around her to win. Teryn is a true example of what it looks like to work hard for what you want not only in her fitness but in life & what it looks like to uplift & root everyone else on while she’s doing it! Love this girl & her journey is so inspiring!
“My fitness journey has been a profound evolution from my early days as a competitive athlete at the age of 12, striving to excel in select sports and feeling the weight of high expectations on my shoulders. Back then, it was all about being the best, meeting benchmarks, and pushing limits.
Fast forward to now, at 29 years old, my journey has taken unexpected turns. I've encountered significant mental struggles with fitness along the way. There were phases where my motivation waned, self-doubt crept in, and external pressures felt overwhelming. It was a battle against both physical and mental barriers, until I became a part of Katy’s gym, Awaken Athletics.
One of the most challenging periods was navigating fitness while being pregnant, to then raising two babies and juggling two jobs simultaneously. Finding time for exercise seemed impossible amidst the demands of parenthood and professional responsibilities. Balancing sleepless nights with the desire to stay active felt like an uphill climb.
However, amidst these challenges, I discovered the importance of nourishing my body with healthier eating habits and simple movement thanks to Katy. Sheena helped me understand that eating well doesn't have to be overcomplicated or restrictive. It's about making mindful choices that fuel my energy and support my overall well-being.
Finding a better headspace wasn't easy—it required introspection, self-compassion, and the courage to redefine success on my terms. Being a part of this Awaken Athletics family, I've discovered the joy in movement, not as a means to an end but as a celebration of what my body can do and how it makes me feel, with all the support behind me!
Today, I embrace fitness as a journey of self-discovery and self-care. It's about progress, NOT PERFECTION. I've cultivated a healthier relationship with exercise and nutrition, one that nourishes both my body and mind. I've learned that true strength is not just physical; it's also about resilience, adaptability, and compassion towards oneself. I’ve come to embrace my Shawn Johnson legs and realize that being a powerhouse is also beautiful.
This journey and Awaken Athletics has taught me invaluable lessons about perseverance and the transformative power of mindset. I share my story not to boast of achievements but to inspire others facing similar struggles. If I can evolve from a place of doubt and struggle to one of empowerment and peace, SO CAN YOU! Sign up for that class, I promise you will be so glad you did. “

I have always tried to be fit, going to the gym and trying different group classes at Thorbeckes. I started crossfit at Sentry almost 10 years ago. I went all out, 5 days a week giving it my all. Did some competitions which were amazing accomplishments. It was amazing to me how strong I could be. I have worked out with or been coached by Katy pretty much since I started crossfit. I was also one of Katy and Mallorys first Flex Fuel clients. I also crushed that and learned a lot about eating for fueling my body and eating the right things. I also realized I had been starving for most of my life. Covid changed everything for me. I had a home gym setup with everything I needed to keep doing crossfit style workouts and It was ok..... When I heard Katy was starting a gym out of her shop I knew I wanted to check it out and I have not stopped going since then. Katy has allowed me to find balance in working out and not feeling like I have to go 110% everyday. I love the group of ladies that I have met and work out with. I love watching them get stronger and fitter. There is just something about doing fitness with a group of ladies that makes you want to show up. The ladies are also great about keeping you accountable and asking “where have you been”. I love how Katy encourages us all, she is a true gem!!!!! Having known Katy through fitness for a long time she pushes me to do more and become the best version of myself.
Fitness can start at any age, being one of the oldest women in the group does not really come into play at the gym, we all just do everything at our own level and progress from there.
My least favorite exercise is running and thrusters. My favorite is probably weight lifting:)

How did your fitness journey begin? What was it like before Awaken Athletics?
I’ve always been active since I was able to play sports in grade school through high school, I really didn’t get into working out harder till after my first child was born when I was 25 and I realized how it made me feel mentally more than anything. I’ve struggled my whole life with weight issues and it was something that helped keep that at bay somewhat.
What have your goals been while coming to Awaken Athletics & how have they evolved?
Well to be honest when I first started in July of 2023 it was to lose the rest of the weight I needed to lose, and to up my workouts. I had been working out at home for years, but I knew I wasn’t pushing myself as hard as I could, and I was tired of working out by myself. Working out with all the women at Katy’s and how encouraging, inspiring and fun they all were, I was hooked and couldn’t wait to go every morning.
Then in September of 2024 my life was changed forever I have raised, trained and raced barrel horses now for over 20 years. I was in a life changing barrel racing accident, and life as I knew it would never be the same. I was bucked off in a run, from a malfunction, and landed just perfect to break my neck. I was life flighted to Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane where I received two surgeries. When I woke up from my first surgery my surgeon said to me " You are a miracle" I had lost all the feeling in my legs and arms, from a broken bone that was pressing into my spinal cord. The surgeon was able to remove the piece of bone, without doing any permanent damage to the spinal cord. I just lost feeling in 3 of my fingers, 2 of which I have almost regained all feeling. From the moment I didn't have any feeling, I promised myself that I would never ever again take my legs or arms for granted, like we all do! I knew from that moment on that I would fight to get back my strength. After my second surgery I couldn't bath, dress or feed myself. I was determined from that moment on to always love my body and try and be strong again, that was my goal. My surgeon told me that because of my compromised other vertebra, that I could never race or ride again, that was such an Un comprehendible thought to me, I honestly thought I couldn't live without my passion. It took my breath away to even think about it. After absorbing that conversation, I knew I had to do what was best for my body, and that was to become strong again, it wasn't an option!
When my surgeon gave me the ok to start exercising slowly again at 8 weeks post op still in a brace, I couldn't even lift a can of soup, I literally started from the very beginning. I went through physical therapy with Laci Ross (who was an amazing therapist) and the second week of January 2024 I went back to Katy's reluctantly, scared and full of fear. I knew I had to do it! I can't even express what it was like to go back to Awaken Athletics and be with the women there, who have encouraged, supported and accepted me for who I was. It literally brings me to tears the amount of support I received from Katy and every woman that I was honored to share 1 hour a day with to bring me back. I know they don't even know the impact that they had on my continued recovery. I'm forever grateful for each one of them and all of their encouragement and support. I love them all!
What Challenges have you had along the way in your fitness journey? I have struggled so badly mentally after the accident with being so "weak"! In my life I have never been "weak". Learning to love my body no matter my size has been tough. When you have struggled with body issues for most of your life, those thoughts just don't go away. But I have learned to love my body and what it has done for me. I don't take one second for granted.
How has your nutrition changed and affected your workouts/overall health? I've always had a "sweet tooth" per say, so I've had to really watch my sugar intake. I also have a really hard time with protein, mainly because I'm not a meat eater. So I've had to really pay attention to getting my protein in and eliminating things that make my body and mind feel like crap.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start? I would say, just go for it! Awaken Athletics is simply amazing! The support from all the women there will keep you wanting to come back for more. You will start to feel amazing both mentally and physically.
How has your lifestyle and mindset changed through fitness? I would say that I look at things so much differently now. I've really focused on myself mentally along with physically. Through this journey I started meditating, and I can't believe how much it has helped with calming of my racing mind. How to keep myself calm. Working out has also just given me such peace in my mind. It has kept me motivated to keep going, even in pain, because the benefits have outweighed anything I could've ever expected. I still have a long way to go in my recovery and in my physical abilities and where I want to be. I don't want or need to be the strongest in the room, I just want to be strong for myself and no one else. This isn't a competition for me, but it's against me and me only. If I can inspire one person to get up and get moving no matter how terrible you feel mentally or physically, I promise you, that you can do it, and you will feel so much better!
What’s your favorite exercise? Least? My favorite exercises are anything lower body, I really like most of those movements. I don't like Burpees or running! But I can say as of March 17th 2024 after getting approval from my doctor I was able to start jogging, jumping and lifting overhead and I don't hate it as bad as I used to! The mind can do amazing things!
Client Highlight: Meet Lexi!
To say i'm impressed w/ this woman is an understatement! It means so much to me to have gotten to coach her through this journey, watch her grow as an athlete & continue to prioritize her health & truly make her journey her own! Lexi you're a true inspiration!
How did your fitness journey begin? What was it like before Awaken Athletics?
-I would say my fitness journey began in high school, especially my senior year. I was going through some mental struggles and the gym was my escape. I continued staying active through college. However, my workouts only consisted of cardio. I would run 3+ miles a day or hop on the elliptical for hours, I also loved hot yoga and zumba classes. I was constantly active & eating next to nothing but never saw any body changes. I was getting discouraged as to why that was. Covid hit which had me stop any physical activity I was doing and I packed on some unwanted weight. October of 2020, my best friend told me she was going to her neighbors for a workout class and I should join. I did and it was the best decision I’ve ever made!
What have your goals been while coming to Awaken Athletics & how have they evolved?
-When I first started my goal was to lose weight, tone up and challenge my body. Now, my goal is to be strong and my healthiest self! It is crazy once you change your goals to something that isn’t about your physical appearance, that’s when you see the most growth!
What Challenges have you had along the way in your fitness journey?
-So many!! When I first started, I didn’t really have an “all in” mindset. At times I loathed coming to workouts because it was just so hard and I was being challenged in ways I’ve never been before! I kept coming and what seemed challenging was getting a little easier. I got to my best self physically and mentally. Then I got pregnant, gained 50+ pounds and had lost a lot of my progress. After I got cleared 6 weeks postpartum, I was back in the gym and going as often as I could. In just a few months, I was back to where I was pre-baby. Now, almost one year postpartum, I am actually in a lot better shape than I was before having a baby and I appreciate my body so much more!
How has your nutrition changed and affected your workouts/overall health?
-When I first started coming, I was nowhere close to eating enough food. Which is so common! I would be exhausted and feel weak during my workouts and even throughout the day. I always had that battle of snacking, trying to eat as little food and always being hungry (shocker). I said something to Katy because I knew she was certified in nutrition. She told me I probably wasn’t eating enough and she was obviously right. She got me on a macro diet specifically for me and I loved it. I now eat more food than I ever have and I’m not afraid of eating food like I used to. Since being on a macro diet, everything has changed. My health, my workouts, energy, my body, mood, you name it! Food is our fuel and I’m so happy I know that now.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start?
-This will sound like a broken record but my best advice would be to JOIN US!! Book a class now! In addition to that, come as often as you can & as your schedule will allow! As someone who started going 2-3 days a week to now comes in 4-6 days a week, you see so much more changes (physically and mentally) that we ultimately strive for! Plus, the community at Awaken Athletics is so welcoming. Everyone there is supportive & rooting for you whether it’s your 1st class or 500th class.
How has your lifestyle and mindset changed through fitness?
It’s so hard to pinpoint all the ways I have changed since coming for the last four years. All I can say is I have changed for the better and in so many ways. Becoming a Mom, you lose yourself a little bit. Coming to the gym brought me back to being myself. Fitness has honestly become a lifestyle for me. It’s like a habit as brushing my teeth in the morning, I feel weird when I’m not doing something to move my body every day. I’m a better person for my son, husband, family, & friends because I take time to work on myself. I am mentally and physically the strongest I have been in my whole life and it’s so liberating.
What’s your favorite exercise? Least?
My favorite exercise is probably deadlifts and running. I have a lot of least favorites but the top two are bench and wall walks.
Client Highlight
Meet Kylene! She is an amazing example of putting in the work over the long term in all areas- mindset, fitness, nutrition, business, relationships.. I’m so proud of this girl, the work she has done & continues to do!!
How did your fitness journey begin? What was it like before Awaken Athletics?
My fitness journey with Katy started in 2018. I was in an unhealthy relationship with myself and romantically. I was a vegetarian, drinking a lot and having a hard time transitioning into a new life after having lived in MN for 8 years. I needed something to focus on and the healthiest way to start was with food. I started working out with her in 2020, doing things I never had before - lifting weights and growing muscle. I was a "college athlete" and loosely went to the gym prior, but was more worried about doing things wrong than learning how to do them correctly. I think I started and cancelled a gym membership 4 times in MN and now I try to go 3-4 times a week, with goals of getting 2-3 runs in a week also.
What have your goals been while coming to Awaken Athletics & how have they evolved?
They started with losing weight and teaching myself to change my perspective when stepping on the scale. (ie - Yeah, of course you weigh the same today, you ate ice cream last night and it's okay.) Fluctuation does not have to cause a mental breakdown. They are now about lifting weights correctly. feeling strong and being proud of the changes my body has made the last 6 years.
What Challenges have you had along the way in your fitness journey?
Oh boy. I became sober 3 years ago which changed absolutely everything. Food, mental state, relationships. Sugar cravings and letting them win are the biggest challenge I still have.
How has your nutrition changed and affected your workouts/overall health?
Between no longer being vegetarian and trying to mindfully lean into the sugar cravings, I feel the best I ever have with nutrition. Because of that I understand my body better - I'm a woman, my body is going to naturally feel/look different every week of my cycle. I feel stronger, more physically confident and because of the energy that Katy creates in Awaken Athletics, I'm more comfortable building relationships with friends/community.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start?
It's a commitment in the best way possible. The culture is positive and supportive. You've got to put in the work to get the results.
How has your lifestyle and mindset changed through fitness?
I'm not a morning person but I know that when I workout first thing, it changes the scope of my day. I feel accomplished, it's the only part of my day that I've been able to control and it changes my mood. It gave me the boost I needed to live a sober life and because of that I've learned to love me fully.
What's your favorite exercise? Least?
I love all the workouts that kick my ass. Obviously not in the moment, but getting in the car after and thinking "my body just did that and that's how I started my day". V-ups and I will just never be a good fit, I am a baby deer
Coach Highlight: Meet Cheyanne!
Chey came to Awaken Athletics first as a client, we have known each other for years as fellow athletes & as coach/client. Everything Chey does, she does with passion & a smile on her face. She truly wants to do her best & wants the best for others. She's always setting goals for herself, crushing them & uplifting everyone around her while she's at it!
How did your fitness journey begin? What was it like before Awaken Athletics?
I would say my fitness journey began in high school, I was always really active with my horses and I was a cheerleader. My senior year a friend of mine did her senior project on fitness and she and I went and took a CrossFit class as part of it, this was back in 2014. After high school I worked out at a local gym before joining CrossFit Thorbeckes in 2017. I went to CrossFit off and on until 2019, and then did my own thing until I joined Awaken Athletics in the fall of 2022.
What have your goals been while coming to Awaken Athletics & how have they evolved?
My goals kind of have a wide range, they started off as just coming a set amount of days to classes, then focusing on my nutrition, then hitting certain numbers in the gym, then getting my CrossFit level one certification and coaching classes, and then being strong enough to RX this years open workouts.
What Challenges have you had along the way in your fitness journey?
I really struggled when the gyms closed down for covid. I'm the kind of person that needs a challenge and goals. I kind of fell apart and felt like I lost the spark and the reason why I really love working out and it took me a while to come back from that.
How has your nutrition changed and affected your workouts/overall health?
Nutrition is the foundation to almost everything and has a huge impact on your psychical and mental health and I think it's important to take it seriously. I've tracked macros off and on with Katy since 2017 so I feel pretty well educated on why it's so important to pay attention to what you're putting into your body. Small habits can make big changes!
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start?
Just take the first step!! You don't have to do something radical, just show up for yourself.
How has your lifestyle and mindset changed through fitness?
For the better that's for sure. I can't imagine a life that doesn't revolve around fitness. It is my true passion and I'm thankful everyday I get to show up and work on myself and help others.
What’s your favorite exercise? Least?
There isn't a whole lot I see in a workout that I don't like. Burpees, rowing, biking, barbell cycling, wallballs, box jumps, you name it, I love it. If you know me you already know the answer to my least favorite exercise, running! But I'm working on it!!
Meet Lacey, she is an inspiration to all of us and has worked SO hard to get where she is! She a true testimony to what hard work and consistency will do!
How did your fitness journey begin? What was it like before Awaken Athletics?
My journey began a year ago in December with a recommendation from a friend. I was
excited to come finally start cashing in on the promise I made to myself about taking care of
my physical health after I had my kids. I was a college athlete and was used to strenuous exercise, but after I was done, I fell off the bandwagon hard. I succumbed to bad eating habits and no exercise pretty quickly. I am
a sucker for carbs and baked goods! When I tried to get back into shape, I had different
gym memberships, tried at home exercise programs, diets, but nothing stuck. I fell back to
old ways quickly; it was discouraging.
What have your goals been while coming to Awaken Athletics & how have they
evolved?
When I started Awaken Athletics, I knew it was going to be HARD, like REALLY HARD! I
was seriously out of shape, but I knew that I needed to do this for myself. My goals were to
feel strong again, to see different numbers on the scale, and to not be so tired.
I have hit many goals over the past year, one being a weight loss goal and another is feeling
stronger. Currently, I am working on different weightlifting goals and continuing to build my
cardio endurance.
What Challenges have you had along the way in your fitness journey?
So many challenges! At first, I needed to get to the gym consistently. Next, it was to
overcome the modifications I had needed when I first started. Then, it was to start adding
more weight to my lifts. Finally, it was to get my body weight in check. Now, my challenges
are a little different, but Katy still kicks my a** every time I step into the gym.
How has your nutrition changed and affected your workouts/overall health?
Nutrition was HUGE for me! When I first started the gym, I didn’t have the intention of
changing my eating habits (ha!). After I started feeling like I was in a good place at the gym,
I knew I needed to make some more changes. After consulting with Katy on my nutrition
goals, I made the changes I needed, and I started to immediately see the results. I put in
some serious work, and I am happy to say that I was able to lose 40 pounds in less than a
year mainly because of my food choices. Now, I work on staying consistent with my healthy
eating habits and exercise.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start?
Do it! What do you have to lose?! It is hard work, but so worth it in the end. Katy is an
amazing mentor/coach and the ladies at the gym are the BEST! Everyone is so supportive
and are there for the same exact reason you are.
How has your lifestyle and mindset changed through fitness?
I can do hard things, really hard things! I am also much more aware of better food choices
that are quick, easy, and fit my family’s needs.
What’s your favorite exercise? Least?
I wouldn’t say I have a favorite, but there are many that I don’t complain about as much. My
least favorites are abs and thrusters.
Client Highlight Meet Nicole!
I think everyone in the gym can attest to Nicole's amazing progress & dedication to the gym! She is such a great example of coming in, doing the work with a smile & making this a true lifestyle! Thank you for being such a light in the gym Nicole!
How did your fitness journey begin? What was it like before Awaken Athletics?
I was in a different stage of my life a few years ago… honestly, I didn’t know who I was in this new chapter – so I started my fitness journey for personal growth. I signed up for a summer-long conditioning hiking class. After that I wanted to challenge myself to keep trying new things.
What have your goals been while coming to Awaken Athletics & how have they evolved?
I thought Awaken Athletics was a perfect fit to build strength and conditioning. I really enjoyed that Katy’s classes are a lot like that hiking class I signed up for. The programming is structured and I walk in with everything to help me be successful already there. Everything is completely scalable based on your skill. My goals have evolved since coming to Awaken Athletics because it helped develop strength to push myself beyond what I thought I was capable of.
What challenges have you had along the way in your fitness journey?
I was never that athletic kid. I didn’t play any sports. And as an adult I sit for hours at work. I was really nervous when I went to my first class. I thought what if I throw up or something?! I’ve learned all the lifts and workouts in a super supportive and non-judgement environment at Awaken Athletics. Katy has developed a community of women that are really accepting and encouraging of each other.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start?
Go for what you want and consistency is key! Learn the movements, ask questions. It took me almost a year to do a box jump. I was so excited when I did! Be proud of yourself and what you can accomplish.
How has your lifestyle and mindset changed through fitness?
I never thought of myself as an athlete prior to coming here. But having that mindset allows me to prioritize the process – I’m less likely to skip a meal, miss hydration goals, or miss a workout. No matter where I’m starting from, with hard work I can improve.
What’s your favorite exercise? Least?
Favorite – Squats! Least – Running is hard.
How did your fitness journey begin? What was it like before Awaken Athletics?
It was basically nonexistent, very random and most days I would talk myself out of it. I mean let's be real I wasn't born with a gym rat mentality or body. Once my kids were grown, I decided it was time to focus on me. I lost 140 lbs and knew I had to be more active to keep it off and do all the new things I was enjoying like hiking and snowshoeing.
What have your goals been while coming to Awaken Athletics & how have they evolved?
When I started, I was satisfied to come 2 times a week. That was great for this couch potato. Then I liked how strong I was getting and how my stamina was improving so I started committing to more days. Now my goal is to be stronger than last week and show up at least 4 days a week. I'm getting ready to sign up for a trail run. Seriously, this would have never been on my radar a couple years ago.
What Challenges have you had along the way in your fitness journey?
My joints. I have always had bad knees and lunges and squats were a real challenge. I got my hormones balanced and now I can almost hang with the heavy hitters ha ha or at least do a proper squat.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start?
Just do it! We welcome and love new people. It's great to see the range of body types and women that come through that door and what they accomplish!
How has your lifestyle and mindset changed through fitness?
I am way more active and don't say no to anything really. I love most adventures now because I know I can do it! I will never be an overweight couch potato again.
What's your favorite exercise?
I like weights to see the improvement in how strong I am getting.
Least?
TURKISH DEATH!! My nemesis!
Client Highlight: Meet Jordan!
If you've been around her at all you know she always puts a smile on everyones face around her! She is a bright light in the gym, works hard and always gives her 100%!
How did your fitness journey begin? What was it like before Awaken Athletics?
Growing up, my world revolved around sports. You name it - I played it. It wasn't until after I had a baby when the weight didn't just "fall off" like everyone said it would, that I realized, for the first time, I would have to work hard to lose weight. Which was new to me. I had always been thin and never had to worry about what I ate. I had gained over 50 pounds throughout my pregnancy and postpartum was rough for me. I didn't like looking in the mirror and that is when I decided I needed to make a change. I started strength training with my cousin a few times a week. Then, Sam talked me into a Saturday workout at Katy's (yes, for my FIRST ever Katy workout - iykyk) and I haven't looked back since.
What have your goals been while coming to Awaken Athletics & how have they evolved?
Originally, when I started training with Katy, I thought all I wanted was to be skinny. Then I realized that I don't want to be skinny, I want to be strong.
What Challenges have you had along the way in your fitness journey?
I am a person who wants to see instant results in everything that I do. I have often found myself getting discouraged because I don't see an immediate change in my body or how well I can handle cardio in the WOD. Honestly, even after 2 years, I still get discouraged with not seeing instant results but then remind myself to look back on how far I have come.
How has your nutrition changed and affected your workouts/overall health?
I was under the impression that if I worked out more, I could eat less and would lose weight quicker. Boy, was I wrong. I now pay more attention to how often I eat and what I eat (like forcing myself to eat breakfast). I am also drinking more water than I ever have. I've struggled with migraines my whole life, and consistently working out, drinking water and eating better has helped tremendously (crazy how that works)!
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start?
I am not great with advice, all I can say is just do it! You will not regret it. This gym is so special and you will leave everyday with your cup being so full!
How has your lifestyle and mindset changed through fitness?
My lifestyle and mindset have definitely changed for the better. I am the healthiest I have ever been and feel the best I ever have, physically and mentally. Which is rewarding in so many ways but I truly think it makes me a better mom and wife. I want to be a positive influence and role model for my kids. Putting your mental and physical health first does not make you a bad mom or partner. I did not change my lifestyle for just myself, I did it for my kids and husband. They deserve the best version of myself, just the same way that I deserve to be the best version of myself.
What’s your favorite exercise? Least?
Favorite would probably be hip thrusts or deadlifts. Least would be any form of a burpee or the bike. For once in my life, running is not my least favorite exercise!
Meet Heather!
It has been such a pleasure watching Heather progress in the gym, she has fully dedicated herself to the process and she has made amazing progress in her fitness in such a short time! She is a hard worker in every area of her life and it’s no different in her health and fitness journey. Thank you for sharing your story Heather!
How did your fitness journey begin? What was it like before Awaken Athletics?
Since I was young I’ve always been active. Dance class, volleyball, basketball, fastpitch, slowpitch, martial arts, P90X, Zumba, etc. However, since high school, I’ve never been consistent with anything really. I’ve been lucky to be naturally muscular and pretty fit for doing nothing super physical most of the time. Pretty much since I’ve always been a workaholic with not much “time” to take care of myself. Just one month before my 49th birthday, my beautiful friend Sarah, noticed I was maybe a little “puffier” than normal and correctly pointed out, “You don’t look happy”. She encouraged me to come to a class at Katy’s gym. So on a Saturday (boot camp day), I staggered in a bit hung over and not prepared for what was about to happen. I flippin hated it and fell in love at the same time. After that class, I came about 3 days a week and made a commitment to myself that by my 50th birthday, I would be the healthiest and in best shape I possibly could. Well almost 2 years later and consistently 4-5 days a week, well…I’m nailing it and I’m never looking back.
What have your goals been while coming to Awaken Athletics & how have they evolved?
Originally my goal was to just show up and get through the workouts. I was drinking a couple glasses of red wine every night with all the excuses in the world that it was actually helping me and making me feel happy. Well after a few months, I started making the choice not to drink the night before a work out – maybe because my competitive side came out and I knew the alcohol was holding me back. I really pushed myself to make the most of what my body had to offer me and I kept on getting stronger, faster, more focused to excel. It’s been fascinating to watch my body transform and I’m constantly challenged by Katy, the other amazing women, and most of all myself. It’s a lifestyle. One that I’m so grateful for and look forward to!
What Challenges have you had along the way in your fitness journey?
Early on it was the nightly wine and poor sleep habits. I also have carpal tunnel in my wrists and tennis elbow in my right “throwing” arm. Amazingly, I push through and my flare ups are almost never at this point. Working all those tiny muscles has actually helped with those conditions and strengthened the tendons and supporting muscles and ligaments. So crazy what regular, supervised, exercise can do for your body and also your mood. OMG! I feel so accomplished and have made working out a priority, over work, which has done all kinds of crazy mindset things for me. Definitely living my happiest life.
How has your nutrition changed and affected your workouts/overall health?
I thought I’ve always been mostly a “clean” eater. When I started at Awaken Athletics, I was a vegetarian and thought that was super healthy. Well after tracking EVERYTHING I ate and drank, and after Katy assessed my eating habits and choices, it was clear that I was not only not getting enough protein but also not eating enough calories. After about a year of craving meat, I broke down and added it back to my diet. Serious game changer! Not only do I have more energy but I feel like my gains have doubled and my recovery is awesome! I still get sore – which means progress – but it lasts for about a day or two and is the “good” kind of sore. I still struggle with eating enough but I’m mindful of it now and it definitely has changed the way I view food and the choices I make. I am in control and get to decide what’s going in my body.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start?
Get serious about taking care of yourself! NO one else can do that for you. You are worth it! Make the commitment to yourself to show up. All the other women at this gym have all started where they were and it’s been amazing to watch us all grow stronger and healthier. We all encourage each other and the support at this gym is like no other. Seriously, you will want to keep coming back. We are all believers that “WE can do hard things”! Just get here. NOW!
How has your lifestyle and mindset changed through fitness?
Oh man, this is a the big one. It’s so awesome to feel strong and be able to do daily activities with no pain because I have all the support from building muscle. My marriage is the best it’s been because I have self-confidence and I feel good in my skin. I still have my moments, likely I always will, but then I remind myself how caring for my body makes me feel amazing and I’m doing the work. I feel like I’ve set a great example for my kids, showing them that a healthy and fit lifestyle can be achieved at any age, the sooner the better, and they see me being dedicated to myself and notice the change in my attitude and outlook. I’m mindful of my choices, I’m mindful of the consequences of my bad unhealthy choices (which I still make sometimes) but I can always reflect on how far I’ve come in just 2 short years, 2 of the best years of my life and it keeps me striving.
What’s your favorite exercise? Least?
I’m quad dominant so I love deadlifts, squats, box jumps. I would’ve said that running was my least favorite, but I’ve actually learned not to hate it and look forward to it sometimes. Power cleans are probably my biggest challenge. But getting done with a work out and walking away thinking, “I did it. I’m a BADASS!” is my favorite part of all.
I love this place and every woman here! Thank you Katy, AWAKEN ATHLETICS is a life changer.
